Day 139: May 18th- Black Rock Forest

Sunny, mild and calm

The view from Black Rock
It’s a perfect day for a hike through the Black Rock Forest Preserve and I have been invited by my grandchildren to help chaperone a 4 mile hike through this 4000 acre preserve. The topography and geology of the forest make this one of New York’s premier educational sites.  It is a unique consortium of universities, public and private K – 12 schools, and other cultural and educational institutions.  It is used for conservation, education, and scientific research.

We were primarily out for the hike today, with little specific concentration on any specific elements of the forest other than its intrinsic aesthetic beauty.  The preserve covers over 1000 feet of relief and we covered much of that on the rocky trails that criss-cross the landscape.  We covered over 4 miles in a 5 hour period and got to know Black Rock Forest first hand.

Just a few scenic shots of what Black Rock has to offer today since when I finished this hike at around 1:30, I was meeting the other members of our “Break-a-hundred” team for a 24 hour “Big Day” competition in which a number of teams from the Mearns Bird Club will be out to see who can find the greatest number of species of birds in Orange County in the period extending from 4:00 PM today (Friday) through 4:00 PM tomorrow.  I’ll let you know how we make out.  Wish us luck!
