Day 124: May 3rd – Elks-Brox Park Black and White

Partly sunny, mid 70s, calm

Well, here we are back in the Empire State.  I certainly seems alien to be back in the more mountainous topography after spending the last four months on the Atlantic Coastal Plain.  Honestly, the first features of any elevation we found whatsoever on our 100 mile trip back home was in Bear Mountain, only several miles south of our home.

Anyway……we head out on our first day of NY birding to Port Jervis.  One of our highly regarded birders of the Mearns Bird Club of which we are proud members has posted sightings for an area out in the corner of the state.  It is called Elks-Brox Park and is located high on the ridgeline overlooking the Delaware.  It is truly a beautiful and tranquil place to bird and according to Rob, can also be very productive.

We are hearing a number of good birds all the way up the winding inclinded roadway.  As we near the top, I can hear several nice birds such as the Nashville and Yellow Prairie warblers.  Finding the birds in the foliage is another thing, however.

Finally, after pulling over and walking along the road’s edge, we find a handsome Black and white warbler.  No one ever asks why this bird is so named.  Sometimes, when you hear the name of a bird and then actually see it, you have to scratch you head and ask, “what was the person who named this bird thinking?”  Not so with this warbler.

We are squeezing this outing in between some earlier shopping and our grandson’s baseball game.  So, after spending some time photographing our warbler, we head back down the mountain and make for the game.   This is a gorgeous spot, however, and we will definitely return when we have more time to invest in exploring this new site.
