Day217: August 4th – Prepping for the day

Another HHH day

Another in a long string of hazy, hot, and humid days begins with warm and very humid conditions.  Even though the temperature has not broken 80 yet, it feels much warmer as the humidity is sky high.

I walked a good deal of the water’s edge along Beach Haven this morning and found that even the birds seem to be effected by the humidity.  In spite of calm skies and temps warm enough to get things moving, all our avian friends appeared to be in the lazy Saturday morning mode.  Unlike all the previous days, I did not see a single tern this morning.

There were many gulls, but few in the air.  Most were all lined up on the beach soaking in the early morning sun.  Many were preening as if prepping for the day.

This juvenile Laughing gull stood motionless for some time and simply gazed out onto the surf.  Again, it’s hard not to anthropomorphize and put your thoughts into the gull's head.  It was as if he was planning his day and enjoying the solitude and calm of the early morn before setting out to do what young gulls do in their normal busy routine.

This older Laughing gull was at least at work, looking for breakfast.  But he too simply stood along the shore, his head moving back and forth as he scanned the breakers for any morsel that Mother Nature would be kind enough to send his way…..home delivery as it were.

It will be interesting to see how things pick up as the day wears on.

Our second batch of grandkids arrived last night and already hit the surf with rod and reel.  The oldest especially is into fishing. and he may well provide me with some photo-ops of the marine life here in LBI to share with you later this week
