Mostly sunny, warm
(84), and a light breeze
Just on the western end of the
causeway leading over to Long Beach Island is a tiny group of houses and
marinas called “Mud City”. In a
way, it is an oasis for birds seeking to get away from the congestion of LBI,
and on occasion can yield some nice birds.
Today, it was pretty quiet,
but did give us a couple of nice shots of some familiar birds. Our first close-up was of the Song
sparrow. This bird has an affinity
for water and is often found along the ocean front pretty much anywhere on the
island. While not an unusual shot,
I am including it because it is a good shot showing the facial characteristics
of the bird. Shot from our RAV,
the bird was picking through the gravel alongside the car and gave us little
concern. We hear the Song sparrow
singing all day long at the condo we are staying at, so it seemed appropriate
to include his image here.
The second shot of the day is
of another bird heard throughout the summer, but not seen all that often. We heard the bird in a thicket and
stopped the car close by…..too close by in the estimation of the Carolina wren
I guess as he came out of hiding and scolded me for being too close.
As I photographed this bird, a second
came out of nowhere and joined in chastising me. Not that often do we get a real nice look at a Carolina ,
and a good look at two at the same time is a real treat.
Finally, just another shot of
the Herring gull and the Greater Black-backed gull. The two were arguing over a piece of bait that a fisherman
has left behind. The shot gives a
nice comparison of the sizes of two of our larger gulls.
As for the mink we were going
to chase this morning, we had some pretty ugly weather last night that carried
over into the early morning hours, so we will wait until another day to go
after them.
