Partly sunny, cool and breezy
A 6 hour drive up to Charleston, SC where we will meet up with our friends the Benedicts from CT and the Dunsts from CA. It’s one of our occasional reunions when after 44 years, we still manage to get together and relive old times.
The birding will of course be kept to a minimum, but after 70 straight days of visiting various birding venues in the forms of State, National, and County parks, it’s time to take a bit of a break and do some “incidental” birding.
Today, after arriving in the city, I walked across the street to Marion Square and looked for whatever city birds I could find.
A Cardinal pair greeted me and sang above my head for a few moments.
The best find of the afternoon, however, was a number of House sparrows which were being fed by some local bird lovers feeding the birds potato chips of all things.
The sparrows sparred over the oversized chips and seemed to pair up to try and secure the major portion. Watching the elder humans feed their wild avian pets was as much or more fun than seeing the birds themselves. It truly is a joy to see how much enjoyment and pleasure the birds give to those of us who are willing to take the time to sit and really enjoy their beauty. The House sparrow is generally considered to just be a “pest” of sorts, but when you take the time to really look and appreciate, they have a charm of their own. So, today’s bird of the day goes to the omnipresent House sparrow.
